Over recent years the resort has received massive investment, with the construction of new hotels and additional resort facilities. Yulen, the company with the licence to run the skiing area of the resort, has invested 50 million Euros in a brand new skiing area. A new resort development, with super luxury hotels and holiday apartments, is being built just opposite the Gondola, which also makes Bansko the resort with the best hotels.
The town of Bansko itself is near the river Glazne, left feed for the Mesta river, by the north-eastern foot of Pirin and right below the highest and most beautiful part of the mountain. Its name comes from the old Bulgarian word “ban”, which means “master”. The Pirin mountain itself has a predominantly Alpine character and Vihren is the highest peak in the area, at 2,914m.
Bansko has become a favourite ski and snowboard destination, thanks to the combination of excellent ski facilities and the unique architecture and historical significance of the area.
Snowboard lovers will enjoy the Balkans attraction park, where they can indulge their passion of the extreme and build jumps to suite their tastes and abilities. Everyday skiers and snowboarders can take part in the competitions on the new piste on Shiligarnika.
Bansko has the best snow record and the longest ski season of all Bulgarian ski resorts, stretching from 15 December right through to May 15.
